New Town Edinburgh

George Street Edinburgh

In the quiet Georgian streets of the New Town nothing can break the enchanted atmosphere of past ages which you can breathe in Edinburgh, as if 200 years of history have never passed.
This area, full of beautiful buildings, has been included in the list of Unesco protected sites, and its creation was a real innovative deed, undertook by a handful of rich merchants as a way to escape from the squalor of the medieval Old Town, where rich and poor people used to live side by side. The young architect James Craig won the competition for the New Town in 1767, presenting a simple project with a grid of three parallel streets, each terminating with a square. Around this first New Town some enlargement works followed.

Today, the New Town includes a series of streets placed in semicircle, connected by arches until Haymarket Station. The best examples of the Georgian quarter can be admired in the terraces of the Dean Village and the quiet streets underneath Queen Street Gardens, connected with the equally magnificent perspectives of Moray Place, Ainslie Place and Randolph Crescent, with their neoclassical façades.
Over the decades, other illustrious architects and engineers added their contribute to the construction of the New Town.Grant yourselves a lunch break or a tea at the Roxburgh Hotel, facing Charlotte Square.
The hotel has not a visible sign, so it might be hard to find it. If you have more time available you should reach the northern edge of the New Town. This is a beautiful path, from the lovely Dean Bridge along the Water of Leith, to the Pump Room of St Bernard’s Well. At the end of Dean Terrace, search for Ann Street, possibly the most beautiful street of the quarter, with small country houses and delightful gardens on every side.
