Why isn’t my city like that ?
A day in this beautiful Scottish city and you’ll be thinking just the same thing.

Not only Edinburghis a wonderful city, but it is likely to be also the perfect city. An example of perfect organization and civil conscience of its inhabitants which has very few competitors among all other world cities. Scottish people are proud of Edinburgh, and this pride is evident in their activities.

Everything is efficient here, from bus services to public toilets cleaning, and even workmen in building sites (90% of whom are Scottish) look enthusiast and relaxed.

When you get into town you will find in every hotel and public place a free copy of brochures with the various attractions in Edinburgh.
The best of these brochures is definitely Welcome to Edinburgh , edited by Landmark Press and published by the Scottish Tourist Board, which provides full information on what to do during your stay in the city, with numerous discount vouchers for some attractions like the Royal Yacht Britannia.

In Edinburgh you can breathe a relaxing atmosphere all the times, and wherever you go, in museums as well as in the numerous pubs, you are always  received with a smile and a gentle phrase. In Edinburgh people will make you feel like home.
There is also a consistent young population living in Edinburgh, which gives the city a joyful and footloose aspect, and you  will be brought to think “if only my children could come studying here” .

As for tourist reception, all the numerous Hotels in Edimburgo have very good quality standards. And for those visiting Edinburgh with their children, baby strollers and child facilities are present in every corner of the city.

Warning: by 21st February, for about 8-9 months, some huge  construction works will take place in Princess Street (the main street flanking the New Town), to construct a tram line, therefore we suggest you to avoid accommodations situated in this street, and to choose other locations in one of the many Edinburgh hotels.

Edinburgh is certainly the most visited town of Scotland, partly because the city  has kept untouched the proud deriving from being the capital of Scotland, a pride which is also the most distinctive symbol of the city fierceness and love for liberty.

Edinburghhistory
Edinburgh, capital of Scotland and seat of the Scottish parliament, is one of the most famous tourist destinations of Great Britain. The first urban settlements in the area date back to the VII century AC, but the development of the modern city and the political power only began in the XV century. It was in fact in 1437 that the city was chosen as capital. Its favourable position on the estuary of river Fort fostered the growth of the port and trade activities (XVIII cent.), but the fundamental rush was given by heavy and naval industry, which started to develop soon after British industrial revolution.
Edinburgh population considerably increased, to the extent that a "New Town" grew up, in contrast with the original nucleon of the Old Town.
Today Edinburgh population counts more than 450.000 inhabitants. Beside the traditional activities linked to naval and heavy industry, fishing and agriculture, other two important industries took over: whisky production and oil and methane extraction in the North Sea. But the most relevant entry in Scottish economy is represented today by tourism.
The cultural growth of Scotland in general, and Edinburgh in<particular, can be found back in the Enlightenment Age and the Romantic period, when Edinburgh turned into one of the cultural capitals of Europe, and the natural landscapes of the Highlands drew poets and romantic painters from all over the continent.
Tourism in Edinburgh is strictly bound to the numerous festival which take place in the city, especially in summer, and to its lively cultural life. Amidst the most famous festivals are the Blues Festival, the Military Parade Festival, the international Festival and the Book Fair. For this reason, Edinburgh has been designated by Unesco a “World Protected Heritage”.

Scotland and magic.
Everybody knows that Scotland is the hometown of one of the most mysterious phenomenon on earth: the Lockness monster. But, as if this reputation was not enough, the country also hosts more modern fairies. The city has been in fact chosen as residence by the ultra famous writer. K. Rowling, author of the celebrated saga of Harry Potter.  Allow yourself to try the experience of writing in the same pub where she wrote Harry Potter.
Many lovers of the book saga actually believe that the Howgwart School of Magic and Witchcraft is based in Scotland, while there is no doubt that professor McGonagall is Scottish, and the major part of the film is set in this country,  due to its foggy and magical atmospheres. And every day it is possible to hop on the Hogwarts Express Train, leaving from Fort William with destination  Mallaig, which runs through the Glenfinnan viaduct (set of the famous film “ the Room of secrets”) with a stunning view on the Loch Shiel. The ticket costs about 25£.

Not only Rowling
Many other famous works take place in Scotland, for instance the “Da Vinci Code” by Dan Brown, in which the Rosslyn Chapel is mentioned, a chapel in the suburbs of Edinburgh characterized by a strong symbolism.  Or the famous cult film “Trainspotting”. And finally, Edinburgh was the hometown of the writer Robert Louis Stevenson, author of the book Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde, as well as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who created the famous character of Sherlock Holmes..

Also born in Edinburgh: the politician and economist Adam Smith, the scientist Alexander Graham Bell, the writer Arthur Conan Doyle, the philosopher David Hume, the soldier Douglas Haig, the author of Trainspotting Irwine Welsh, the physician James Clerk Maxwell, the father of geology James Hutton, the writer Robert Louis Stevenson, the actor Sean Connery, the former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
