The Grassmarket, with the Castle lying on the background, has been a central point and the city marketplace for more than 500 years. It was right here that public executions took place, directed by the infamous Maiden, and it was always here that the notorious William Burke and William Hare searched for their victims, which served for their macabre trade of corpses. The area is now a lively centre full of night attractions, and its streets swarm with night lovers swinging from crowded pubs to night-clubs. During the day you may also visit typical shops or simply relax in the numerous cafés.
