Edinburgh underground

Edinburgh underground

Underneath the streets of Edinburgh lies a maze of ancient subterranean streets, since every building was raised over pre existing streets and constructions. Edinburgh hides a real town underneath. What’s left of the majority of the old buildings situated underground is still visible. Over the years many allegations and legends went round, regarding the use that was made of the subterranean city: from Masonic societies to orgiastic sects, to hiding places for criminals. Someone says that in one of these secret rooms could have been hidden for a while the Sacred Graal, in order to protect it from wars.

Whatever the use which was made of this hidden city over the course of the years, its charm has kept untouched, and Underground Edinburgh is absolutely worthy of visit.

There are many organised tour which offer a visit of the city: the most famous one takes to Mary King's Close, which is said to be “the only street where it never rains”. Situated along the Royal Mile, this area was often hit by plague, which would often and easily spread in the polluted streets of the Old Town. The entire district was closed for various months in 1645. Info and booking on : http://www.realmarykingsclose.com/
