Edinburgh, the political and cultural capital of Scotland, offers a wide range of attractions, from museums to historical palaces to events.
Edinburgh Old Town is one of the best preserved in Europe. Nestled among the volcanic hills of Castle Rock, Arthur's Seat and Calton Hill, the medieval Old Town and the Georgian New Town offer opposite historical frames.
The steep tortuous lanes and the old buildings of the Old Towngive an idea of the overcrowding which must have characterised the middle age, when Edinburgh was called "Auld Reekie" (Old Smoke) because of its chimneys. On the contrary, the luminous and large squares of the New Town, with the large avenues and the elegant residences and gardens, show how different was the life of rich citizens who could afford living here.
